The Power Of Science

The last two weeks of school Room 10 and 9 have joined forces to do science experiments together. We are mainly looking around sound. We are in 5 different groups, a mixture of Room 10 and 9. I am in a group with Agueer, Diego, Frank, Nurul, Riiana and Mary-Ruth. (Don't forget to check these amazing bloggers to!)

Different pitches and different objects make some sort of music. Vibrations and movement s one big part of sound. I have learnt so much about sound that, I believe I can actually make music with everyday objects thinking about the different pitches. It won't be hard because I understand how vibrations work.

Is It Football Or Is It Soccer?

Every Wednesday my class go out on the field to some sport. A lady called " Hannah". Hannah is our coach. We start by doing some warm up's.
We do:

  • Dragon tail
  • Octopus
  • Tag
  • Stuck in the mud
But just remember that's only the warm up. Once we played at least 5 or 6 games to the point were we are warmed up or a little tired. Hanna then splits us up into 4 groups. Two groups are wearing bibs. The other groups have no bibs. One team with bibs and no bibs go against each other, same with the other teams too. We play soccer or as some people call it football.

I enjoy playing soccer with my class/friends. We play for 40 minutes in total from the very beginning to the end. I would like to say thanks to Hannah for teaching us and playing with us. Today, Wednesday 28th 2017 is our last day of Kiwi sports.

"Catching The Bus In Samoa" - Reading

Today my group read "Catching The Bus In Samoa". We were comparing what it is like to catch a bus in New Zealand and Samoa. There is a big difference between Samoan bus' and New Zealand bus'.

Samoan Bus'                                                        New Zealand Bus'
  •               Plastic windows                                                      Glass windows
  •               No doors                                                                  2 doors
  •               Uncomfortable seat padding                                 Comfortable seat padding
  •               Small                                                                         Big
  •               Bright coloured                                                         Limited colours

I thought this was very interesting. I never knew how different the bus' would be.

Malo e lelei... What Does That Mean?

These  past view weeks we went into groups of 4 and made a presentation about Tonga. I am Samoan so I don't know much about Tonga but, I found it very interesting learning about Tonga. I have learnt how hot it get's in Tonga, the language and the capital city of Tonga.
Thanks to Leaaepeni, Joanlisi and Tyra for being in a group with me.

"Don't Waste The Water!" - Reading

                                                 "Don't Waste The Water!"

This article takes place in Samoa - Apolima and Manono. A young Samoan girl called Elisapeta Manupo lives a life of responsibilities. She wakes up early every morning at 6 and gets dressed. Elisapeta grabs a wooded pole and two plastic buckets. She balances the buckets on her shoulder using the wooded pole. Holding the buckets, she walks down a winding path to a well. The well has fresh water to drink. She avoids the leaves and fills the buckets with water. Carrying the heavy buckets on her shoulders she walks back home.
That was a quick summery of "Don't Waste The Water!". I enjoyed reading this book because I learnt some Samoan words and I now know how difficult some people's life's can be.

Lucky One

Family… Why is family important to me? My family are my closes friends. I have a Samoan family so, my family is quite big. I live with 5 people plus one puppy and one cat. Some people don’t even have families so I am lucky I have one.

F is for “ Forever together no matter what “.
A is for “ Always there for each other “.
M is for “ Making lots of memories to remember “.
I is for “ Incredibly fun “.
L is for “ Laughing together “.
Y is for “ Yawning together making funny faces “.

Write about it!
Write your own speech about something important to you. Church? School? Family?
Why is it important to you?

On Monday for reading my group had to write a speech about something important to us. It's not much but it's something. I find it really sad that some people don't even have families but, people with families shouldn't take it for granted.

Let Term 2 Begin!

May the 1st Monday, time for term 2 to begin.
" Jess, get ready for school! "
That is what my mum said to me this morning. I looked at so tried then remembered school was starting again. It's going to be a really busy term and new things to do.

This term we started to do some science experiments. We do them on Friday's or Thursday's.  We just started learning about Tonga. I am not Tongan so I don't know much. I am so excited for term 2 to go on and for the rest of the year. School to some kids is boring but I enjoy school so, I get bored in the holidays really fast.

The Eyes Of A Soldier

Mary-Ruth, Konzay, Tristan and I wrote this poem about what we would see and feel as a soldier. Pretending to be a soldier was scary. You must be wondering why it would be scary, right? Being in war knowing that you're fighting for your country and your family is freaky. Bullets everywhere, exploding bombs and cannons!

Harry's War - Comic

Today my reading group Percy Jackson read a comic called " Harry's War " It was an interesting comic. It was about a soldier called "Harry". Harry lived on a farm with his friend "Ted". It explained how Harry felt in war. He was bored, unhappy and depressed. Harry sent a postcard to his best friend " Ted ". He wrote how he felt about camp and being a soldier, he also asked Ted some questions about him. Like "How are you doing?" or "How is the farm?". I learnt two new words/palaces by reading this comic.

ANZAC Day Information

(Click on picture to see better)
I learnt a lot of new information about ANZAC Day. ANZAC stands for, Australian New Zealand Army Corps. ANZAC Day is very important to lots of people. My granddad was in war and then was able to live in Samoa.

ANZAC Day Is Coming!

Today we wrote a cinquain poem about ANZAC. A cinquain poem is basically a describing poem. The first line only has one word which is the title. The second line should have two words describing the title, the third line should have three words expressing actions. The fourth line needs to have four words expressing feeling and lastly the fifth line needs one synonym for the title. Now you know how to write a cinquain poem!

In the comments below tell me your favourite thing about ANZAC Day.

Chuck! Check! Cheer! - Ing

(Click on picture to see better)

For reading on Tuesday we did "Chuck! Check! Cheer!". We had to make up as many words as possible with the letters "Ing" in it. I have at least over one hundred words. I was very impressed with how many words I wrote. I really enjoyed this because I kept on having competitions with my group.

I got a little help from my mum and dad. My dad decided to be a funny guy and add " Farting" when I wasn't looking. When I got back to my laptop I saw "Farting" there and started laughing hard out!

Role Models - Duffy Assembly

Today we had a Duffy Assembly. Robert Rakate was our Duffy role model. He played "The Brown Wiggle" in The Wiggles and made a song about New Zealand. Lots of kids LOVED it! Robert is a funny guy he, started to act like "Dwayne Johnson". He made everyone at Ruapotaka School laugh and giggle.

He started to talk about how important saving our books for our kids, grandchildren and so on. His speech was very inspirational and convincing.

How To... Draw Different Hairstyles!

Today my reading group (Percy Jackson) read "What's For Pudding?". This article was written by Adam Pryor. A young girl called "Rosemary" lives in The Solomon Islands. Her and her friend, "Joseph" made a traditional dish called "Makira Pudding". It's made out of cassava and coconut milk. "You must be very patient" Say's Rosemary.

(Their quote) At Last! It's Worth Waiting For.

What's The Time?

What's the time? As I said in an earlier post we are learning about time. Time is key to having a good schedule. I have never been good at telling the time but I think I am getting better!

Ow! I Hate Mosquitoes!

Ow! Apologies, I whacked myself too hard! Insects such as fleas, head lice and mosquitoes bite us. Do you lie in your bed in the dark and you hear something? Do you ever feel like something is about to attack? This what I call a sneak attack! Mosquitoes are cold-blooded so they prefer temperatures over 80 degrees so, they LOVE summer.

“What happens BEFORE you get bitten by an insect?” Well a mosquito first starts probing for a thin-skinned area, preferably one close to a blood vessel. The mosquito injects numbing saliva before sucking blood. The mosquito can be very gentle that you don’t even know it’s there! This gives them an opportunity to repair and take our blood.

Do you hear a buzz noise? Mosquitoes well, female mosquitoes suck our blood and leave a little mark. If you have an itchy spot on your skin don’t scratch it too much. Why? Well here is your because, sometimes it can get infected. When the female mosquito finds a wound she injects her saliva into it. The female mosquito repairs your blood to produce eggs. Male mosquitoes feed on flower nectar which is better than getting a  bite… I can only imagine getting attacked by a male mosquito.what

Do you feel itchy? Fleas maybe one reason why. Fleas are really annoying, Why? Because fleas  are hard to kill. Do you ever smack a flea and think it’s dead? Well sorry but you’re wrong. To kill a flea you need to pop it between your finger nails. “Hey why do fleas bite us?” Well, fleas feed off warm-blooded host. They can survive without a host for two to three months but, they rather live longer.

“What happens AFTER you get bitten by an insect?” Well, after you are bitten by a mosquito they leave a little red mark on the bitten skin area. The bite doesn’t always start itchy right away. Sometimes it can take a couple of hours till you notice an itchy mark.

Measurement & Time

Goal Of The Week:
Right place, Right time.

For maths this week we've been learning about measurement and time. We learnt how to tell time well... we're still learning. Measurement can be showed in many different ways. Meters, Centimetres, Millimetres and many more. It is helpful to learn in life. Time can help you get to places at the right time.

We Take Flight!

Every Wednesday we do some art with Mrs. Hoeberigs. Lately we've been drawing native New Zealand birds! I drew a Tui and a Fantail. It was challenging for me to draw a realistic bird and to get all the tiny details. I think my picture came out pretty awesome and really detailed! The picture above shows my art and my friends art plus a real Tui!

Goals Of 2017 Term 1

It is 2017 term one and I need some goals. I have five goals for school and one goal just for me! My goal just for me is for art! I want to do more shading and use more colours. Here are my goals for school!

So Cold

These past few weeks we've been swimming. My school has one pool. Our pool isn't the biggest but at least we get to cool off and swim while we got these hot summer days.

Yesterday we got instructors. Two kind ladies called Tara and Rachel came and tested us. I'm in group 2. Yesterday we had a hand standing competition in the water. It was really fun. Today we had a man called "Anthony" teaching us. We had to do freestyle and backstroke.

Guess Who's Back... Back Again!

Welcome! It's the 3rd week of school and I'm so happy to be back again! I am 10 years old. I am a year 6 student enjoying my time with friends and family!

I am Samoan, Fijian and Chinese. I have learnt new techniques for my art and I have some new hobbies!

I really enjoy taking photographs and making old photographs into something new! Like this:
I have two old photo's of my dad and I plus one new photo from 2017. I like editing, and redrawing photo's in my free time or spare time. I take lots of pictures when travelling, going to the beach and when we go look at waterfalls.

Like I said in my first blog post I really enjoy art! I have come up with new techniques. I started colouring in and I got some pro makers. I am still learning how to blend in and add shading. I do a lot of drawing. Painting is not my definition of art. Painting is something different in my book.

"What's 9+10?" Oh sorry I was doing my maths. I also enjoy maths. I do maths a lot. I do it at the supermarket and in the car. Maths is fun well, at least for me! Last week on Friday I got principals award for my maths!

A new year has began, new adventures await and new friends to be made. I am so excited for the rest of the year!

I can't wait to find out what class I'm in, who I'll meet and I can't wait to see all my friends! Hopefully I don't get sick. There's going to be lot's and lot's of testing and blogging to be done.

Day 10: Numbers, Numbers And More Numbers

I really enjoy maths because it's challenging but fun. You get to use different materials, different measurements and different strategies to use. I like solving math problems by myself because I really get's my brain working. When ever I'm on holiday I go work with my mum and ask her to print me out some math sheets. I usually get 4 different piece's of paper.

Day 10: School Timetable

Here is a  Germany school timetable:
Day 1
Day 2
8:00 - 8:45 a.m.
8:45 – 9:30 a.m.
9:30 - 9:40 a.m.
9:40 -10:25 a.m.
10:25-11:10 a.m.
11:10-11:30 p.m.
11:30 – 12:15 p.m.
Physical Education
12:15- 1:00 p.m.

This timetable is very different compared to my school timetable and the time is different also
We begin school with fitness then we/my class do oral language. Sometimes we read some really interesting news on KiwiKidsNews after.  Then spelling, either writing or maths and then it's morning tea time.
Just by comparing my writing to the timetable above you can tell a few things are different. I would stay in my school instead of going to the Germany school because, I like my school routine.

Day 9: Meet The Duggar Family!

The Duggar Family is a big family that keeps on growing. I don't have a big family or any siblings so I wonder what it'll be like if I was in  the Duggar family. I would have 18 brothers, 18 sisters and one mum and dad.

Why I would Like Being In A Large Family
  1. I would have someone to play with at home.
  2. I won't feel lonely and bored.
  3. Share a room with a sister or two.
  4. Play made-up games with brothers and sisters.
Why I Wouldn't Like Being In A Large Family

  1. Lot's of sister's and brothers.
  2. A lot of mess.
  3. Arguments.
  4. Younger siblings might annoy me.
  5.  There might be prank wars.

Day 9: Time To Meet The Family!

In my family I'm the only child. I live with my mum, dad, nana, papa and my cousin, Chloe. My auntie and cousin, Ardyn are staying with us for the time being. My dad's family is Chinese but mostly Samoan and my mum's side of the family is Fijian. There are 8 people in my house but usallly there's 6. Do I do chores? Well... I try my best to clean up but my house get's dirty so fast! Also I'm a bit lazy. My dad runs a gym called "Strength Tech". We go there in the weekends or other wise we try to go there in the week. There you go facts of the truth.

Day 7 Week 2: What Am I Eating?

In this picture I'm eating a little piece of kumara . There are several varieties of kumara such as red kumara, purple kumara and orange kumara. Kumara is actually the Māori way of saying sweet potato. Kumara is a healthy vegetable anyone can eat!... Unless if you're allergic.

Welcome 2017!

Happy New Year! A new year has begun and more learning to do. Hopefully I remember to say 2017 instead of 2016.😊 I can't wait to get back to school for 2017.  I hope everyone has a good year! Good luck to all!

Day 8 Week 2: Summer Fun

In the summer like to swim with my auntie and two cousins. We have competitions on who can hold there breath the longest and who can knock down the chicken  first. "Knock Down The Chicken" is a team game with two people on each team, one person has to carry the other person on their back. The person on the getting carried has to knock the other person getting carried.

I also like going to Skate Land  with my mum. I use the inline skates. I go really fast around the rink. The rink is very slippery  and shiny. There are disco light's everywhere and music playing. They do rollerskating limbo and fun games and races.
