How to make a gorgeous Cherry Blossom Tree

This Blossom tree is very easy to make. It’s super fun to create with a friend! So don’t forget to ask a friend to join you.

You will need:

• A piece of A3 paper (White)
• Black paint
• Newspaper
• Water
• Water paint (Blue and Green)
• Paint (Cherry red, dark pink, purple and white)
• A4 paper ( White)

Equipment:

• Paintbrush
• Straws

Method

1. Cover your table or the place where you’re painting with newspaper.
2. Fill a container with water.
3. Grab your A3 paper and dip your paintbrush in the water.
4. Lightly dip your paintbrush in the blue water paint.
5. Light strokes up and down the page, don’t forget to leave space for the grass.
6. Repeat step 5 with the green water and paint in the extra space. Let it dry.
7. Grab your A4 paper and dip some black paint on your paper.
8. Blow air through a straw, to make a tree shape with your paint.
9. Repeat step 8 but on your background. Once you’re happy with your tree let it dry and you can move on.
10. Mix some Dark pink and white to make pink.
11. Lightly dip your finger tip in the White paint and dab some dots’ on the brunches. Make sure they’re not to close to each other.
12. Repeat step 11 but with the other colours. Let it dry

Tip: Add some dot’s to the bottom of the tree, but not too many.

There you go you have a gorgeous Blossom Tree to show to your friends and family.

Did You Feel That?

Did you feel that?… The ground is shaking. It was 12:02am Monday morning and no-one was expecting the intense impact that the 7.5 magnitude earthquake would bring. The affected regions were North of Christchurch and Wellington but there were claims that shocks could be felt, right to the top of the North Island.

It made a 16km hole, deep in the ground followed by approximately  1,500 aftershocks. This number is still increasing. Two 6.2 magnitude quakes have been reported by Kaikoura. The ex-rugby captain Richie McCaw and commercial helicopter pilot has been flying rescue teams into the worst-affected areas after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Monday.

A tsunami warning has been issued to a number of areas around New Zealand. This includes all of the East Coast of New Zealand both in the North Island and the South. The tsunami has hit Kaikoura. Mass evacuations are taking place from a number of coastal settlements on the east coast of New Zealand. At this stage there are casualties, but the exact number is unknown, and numerous people have been injured.

If there was an earthquake where I’m staying I would:

1. Warn who ever is around me
2. Go under a table closest to me or if I'm outside I'll curl up like a turtle under a tree.
3. Stay calm

If there was a tsunami I would:

1. Warn who ever is around me
2. Get to higher ground or land
3. Don't panic

A New Adventure Awaits

This week my mum came into school to talk about me talking my Chromebook home! I was super-hyper. After my mum left I rushed to class to see if I was the first year 5 to be able to take my Chromebook home and… I was! It was a double win for me… Anyways my day was amazing it got even better when I got to take it home, to show my class blog, my blog and some of my work I’ve done so far!

Once I got home I told my mum about my Chromebook and she said ‘’You happy now’’ then I said ‘’I’m always happy!’’ We both laughed. I was so excited I want to be on my Chromebook for ages but I made sure I still had battery for the next day. I took a photo of me with my Chromebook very happily.

Thank you so much for paying for our buses to go to the Botanical Gardens to allow us to learn about plants, how a garden helps us and to learn new words. I really enjoyed looking at the blossom trees and different sculptures as well as plants.

A Day In The Garden

On Thursday the 13th of October Ruapotaka school went on an adventure to the Botanical Gardens in Auckland. I was extremely excited! I saw gorgeous flowers everywhere! Even the entry had marvelous flowers!

We walked in and saw trees all shapes and sizes and different varieties. I also tried to get a good view of different sculptures and tiny details on flowers. While hiking I heard birds chirping, their beautiful songs, busy, buzzing bees working... I even heard water dripping from waterfalls. We walked pass a few cute dogs and puppies with their owners.

My favourite sculpture was the waterfall *also known as “Turn”. This sculpture was my favourite because instead of having a regular waterfall with water flowing down, they made a staircase waterfall. The waterfall (*AKA Turn) reminded me of the stairs from “Charlie And The Chocolate Factory”.

Wherever I walked I could smell nice perfumes in the air.  We approached some beautiful blossom trees surrounding a massive field with a Japanese sculpture in the center. Being around the cherry blossom trees I felt like I was exploring Japan’s beautiful highlights.

As we were walking we came across a beautiful bunch of magnolia flowers. They were one of my favourite flowers because they had a nice blush pink colour with white on the outsides. The petals were long and looked pretty strong and straight too. The Magnolia had great long green leaves. I really enjoyed going to the Botanical Gardens and learning about plant cycles and other scientific garden terms.

So What Are You In For?

Last week on Friday the 12th of August I went to the zoo with some year 3, 4, 5 and 6’s. Rooms 5, 6 and 7 went and saw animals from Africa.

We were split up into groups of 5 or less. I was split up with my classmates Riiana, Leanah, , Malia, Guinevere and Jozlo.

We saw mini otters swimming and talking to each other by sign language and by staring at each other. We walked around the zoo and ended up at the fearsome tigers. There were two exhibits for the two tigers. One tiger was hiding under a tree while, the other one was in the bushes on a white blanket. We roamed free until we came to a new exhibit with an Emu picking at the landscape. My group arrived at the Brolga birds. The Brolga have long stretched necks the colour of grey.

We appeared near the tortoises next to the ear-splitting macaws next to the spider monkeys. There were 3 enormous tortoises crawling very slow. Leanah took some photos using room 9’s tablet. Riiana and I walked over to the macaws, covering our ears. The macaws had blue, yellow, black, green and white feathers. We ate morning tea near the spider monkeys near the macaws, one of the spider monkeys were really naughty.

Three groups were near us and ate morning tea near us. Once everyone in my group finished eating we started to walk to the tarantula exhibit where we saw one deadly spider. Before the clock turned to 11:30 we started walking back to entrance so three zoo workers could take us to the African animals, to learn about them. A lovely lady called Kristy took Room 9, my old class to the hippo exhibit, to look at faith the hippo who has sadly died. We learnt a lot about hippo’s. Kristy took as to the baboons with very red bottoms. Everyone couldn’t keep focus because everyone saw the cheetah exhibit. Once Kristy finished talking some people asked if we could look at the quick cheetahs’, Kristy said of course.Most of the boys and some girls ran over to look, everyone was excited. There were 3 cheetahs but we only saw 1 cheetah behind a little hill.

We all said thank you to Kristy, then left in our groups but still a bit close to each other. We settled next to the lion exhibit to eat our lunch. When we were eating a cheeky chicken came around us. It was really hilarious because the teachers were trying to get rid of the chicken but, the chicken came back again and again.

Once we finished eating we started heading back to the bus.( We saw so many meerkats) When we all got together we said thank you to the zoo workers, then left. My favourite animal was the macaws because their colourful birds and who doesn’t like a colourful bird?
